Three more women join lawsuit against Maine Department of Corrections over transgender policy

Three more women have signed onto a federal lawsuit against the Maine Department of Corrections for allowing transgender prisoners to be housed in facilities that align with their gender identity.

First brought by Katie Mountain in April, the lawsuit now includes Jennifer Albert, Michaela Sargent and Danielle Foster, who say they live in fear at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham because of the DOC policy.

“The planning board decided on its own to stick in a lot of the things that the town had just had this bitter fight over,” Cynthia Dill, a former Democratic state legislator who opposes the proposal, said. “There’s a lot of people who just don’t believe that big, tall apartment buildings should line the streets of Cape Elizabeth, and they have the right to believe that.”

“Cynthia Dill of 1227 Shore Road made a comment that the Cape Elizabeth Town Council has authorized a feasibility study on the same proposed parcel of land as the ER Cape Elizabeth Landfi ll LLC solar array project. She added that Sebago Technics is looking into where the site is suitable for multiplex housing projects that would assist in the town being compliant with LD2003 housing density regulations. Dill suggested that the site could resemble Colonial Village with updated, affordable housing for seniors looking to downsize their homes, single family residences, and multiplex housing.” (Page 15)
